Shanghai Theater Academy has announced details of its 2019 performance season. 

Now in its eighth year, it will run until July 2 and look back on the achievements of the academy over the years. 

Outstanding stage productions covering a wide range of genres and styles will be showcased for local audiences, many of them the graduation plays of the academy’s directing, acting and stage design departments.

Students will present new stage adaptations of acclaimed movies “I Am Not Madame Bovary” and “Raise the Red Lantern.”

Lu Ang, director of the academy’s directing department, said young students have been involved in the creation of many original plays, mostly realistic dramas on the lives of ordinary people.

Liu Zhenyun, author of “I Am Not Madame Bovary,” spoke highly of the artistry of the adaptation and its novel way to tell the story.

Liu will give a lecture to the students sharing his expertise and experience in writing and theater. 

The performance season will also host a digital exhibition and multimedia productions.

Theater experts from home and abroad will be invited to discuss new trends in creative theater at international workshops. 

Huang Changyong, the academy's director, said that it is hoped to develop the annual performance season into a cultural brand of the city. It is also a platform to foster the country's young theater professionals.
