脸谱是中国戏曲文化的独特创造。脸谱既有与面具相同的面具性，又具有区别于面具性的脸谱性。在中国当下以"脸谱"为切入符号的民族电影中，出现三种脸谱的演绎类型：由脸谱所承栽的中国戏曲文化切入，脸谱的能指与所指统一于现实中的人，脸谱性融合于面具性。民族化的脸谱电影虽然以"脸谱性"吸引观众的视点，但民族电影真正震撼人新的不是民族文化的"脸谱性"，而是电影叙事的"面具性"。
