2016 Master Class of the Meisner Technique & Linklater Voice In 2016, funded by Shanghai Top Discipline program, the Acting Department of Shanghai Theatre Academy and the Experimental Teaching Studio of International Performing Arts will invite world-class experts-- Mr. Scott Trost and Mr. William Gabriel Grier to host the Master Class of the Meisner Technique, and Mrs. Kristin Linklater and Mrs. Natsuko Ohama to host the Master Class of Linklater Voice, in total 180 hours professional training classes to teachers. The participants of the Master Class include teachers of Shanghai Theatre Academy, as well as teachers and postgraduate students from major universities and academies such as People’s Liberation Army Academy of China, Beijing Film Academy, Communication University of China, Chinese National Academy of Arts, Academy of Opera Peking University, Beijing Union University, Donghua University, Shenyang Normal University, Jilin University of Arts, Shanghai Film Art Academy, Zhejiang Vocational Academy of Art. The participants either attend the training sessions or tackle with the theory research work. The Meisner Technique is an approach to acting developed by one of the former three major representatives of “method” acting, Sanford Meisner, who based his theory on decades of practices and theory research. The technique emphasizes that actors should learn how to live truthfully under imaginary circumstances. The unique repetitive exercises of the Meisner approach, even if practiced for a short time, can introduce an actor to the principles that all great acting share. Mr. Scott Trost and William Gabriel Grier, two world-class experts in teaching the Meisner Technique are invited from the U.S. to China to host a 10-day intensive training program from October 15th through 24th 2016 at Shanghai Theatre Academy. The Linklater Approach to Voice is also known as “Freeing the Natural Voice”, a unique approach to training actors’ voices developed by American theatre artist, voice training master Kristin Linklater. With this approach, professor Linklater said: “I want to hear the person, not the voice.” from actors. Through a series of lengthy and rigorous practical exercises, one will be able to freely communicate their feelings and thoughts. Master Linklater and Natsuko Ohama, another theatre master who teaches the Linklater Approach to Voice, are invited to come to teach the master class from December 7th through 16th, 2016 and from January 2nd through 11th, 2017 at Shanghai Theatre Academy. The training of this master class is expected to fill the gap in training actor’s voice and supplement the singing and articulation speech work that is done in actor training for decades in China, and positively promote the development of acting training practices and theory.
